The temple ground in Sugamo is quiet enough for footsteps to become part of the visit. For Hikaru no Go, Honmyoji matters because Sai’s longing is not abstract here. Honinbo Shusaku was a real player, a name carried through Go history, and the story lets that history press back into Hikaru’s present. When Hikaru begins to understand what Sai has lost, places connected to Shusaku stop being trivia and become evidence. A grave, a temple wall, a small pocket of stillness in Tokyo: these are enough to make the past feel close. The board in the series is never only black and white stones. It is memory arranged in intersections, waiting for someone living to notice.
