Secret Garden | Petite France — The Stuntwoman He Mistook for the Star

The first thing you hear is not French. It is the click of heels on cobbles and a director shouting for the next take.

Petite France sits on a slope above Gapyeong, a rebuilt village of painted shutters, steep roofs and a clock that does not keep Paris time. In November 2010, SBS used this public street for the opening circuit of Secret Garden. Gil Ra-im, a stuntwoman who wanted to be a martial-arts director, was doubling for a celebrity when Kim Joo-won walked into the shot and could not look away.

The village is still open. You pay at the gate, climb the same lane, and stand where a department-store heir first saw a woman fall correctly. The Little Prince statues and the pastry windows are later additions to the same hillside. The scene that mattered was the work: a body hitting the ground on purpose, and a man who thought he was watching a star.

Walk the lane in daylight. The shutters are ordinary. The mistake is what the drama kept.
