3:10 to Yuma|Galisteo — The Adobe Village That Played Bisbee

The stagecoach comes apart on a hillside outside Bisbee, and the man who ordered the robbery rides into town afterward to drink at his leisure. That town is Galisteo, twenty miles south of Santa Fe, and it needed very little dressing. American Cinematographer's account of the production is plain about the split: Bonanza Creek Ranch stood in for Contention, where the climactic shootout takes place, and Galisteo portrayed Bisbee, where Wade and Evans meet.

Roughly two hundred and fifty people live here. The village lies low along Galisteo Creek, screened by old cottonwoods, its adobe walls set right against the shoulder of State Road 41. Some of the houses go back to the late eighteenth century. The Historic American Buildings Survey photographed one of them, a stone-and-adobe house from around 1880, long before any film crew arrived. Walls lean. Roofs sag in the middle. Dirt lanes run off the highway and stop at a gate.

Galisteo has been doing this work a long time. The Cowboys came in 1972, then Silverado, Young Guns, There Will Be Blood, Thor, and the Netflix series Godless. Crews keep returning because the skyline holds — no power lines cutting the frame, no aluminum siding, no second story anywhere in sight.

Drive it slowly and stay on the public road. This is a village with mail delivery and a rodeo every summer, not a standing set. What you notice is how little separates the film's Arizona Territory from an ordinary Tuesday afternoon here: a horse in a corral, a man mending a fence, and the same yellow dust rising behind every vehicle that passes.
