Biography|Larry Fink — The Royce Hall Quad Where He Took a Political Science Degree
kevin
People treat Larry Fink as a Wall Street original.
The first degree was a political science B.A. from UCLA, conferred in 1974 on this quad.
Royce Hall has faced the central axis of the Westwood campus since 1929.
The College of Letters and Science that granted the degree still works out of the buildings around this lawn.
Fink grew up in Van Nuys, in the San Fernando Valley, one of three children of a shoe-store owner and an English professor at Cal State Northridge.
Later profiles in the Financial Times and Britannica record that he drifted into political theory and took almost no business classes until his senior year, when a few graduate real-estate courses changed the plan.
The property-developer idea did not survive the next two years.
He stayed on campus for an M.B.A. in real estate at what was then the Graduate School of Management, conferred in 1976.
The business school of that era sat in the mid-century building now occupied by the Luskin School of Public Affairs, at 337 Charles E. Young Drive East.
The present Anderson complex at Sunset and Westwood did not open until 1995.
From these steps he went east.
Goldman Sachs turned him down after a final interview, a rejection he later called useful in interviews with the Financial Times.
First Boston, then one of the special-bracket houses, took him instead.
The long hair and turquoise jewelry that those profiles mention belong to that departure, not to this brick facade.
Stand on the stairs and the story is ordinary in the best way: a Valley kid, a public campus, a degree that did not point at bonds.
The mortgage desk came later.
