8 Mile|8 Mile Road at Schultes Avenue — the line the whole film is named after

It is just a road. Eight lanes of asphalt, party stores, muffler shops, a bus that runs all night. But 8 Mile Road — signed M-102, and named for sitting eight miles north of the Detroit River — is the hard edge between the city and the suburbs of Macomb and Oakland counties, and for most of the twentieth century it functioned as a colour line as much as a municipal one. Everything the film is about is legible from the curb.

Turn north off 8 Mile onto Schultes Avenue in Warren and you reach 20785, the mobile home park that stood in for Rabbit's mother's place. It is still a working community under a different name, with people living in it, so look from the street and go no further. What matters is how close it is to the road: the trailer, the bus stop, the plant, the club, all inside a few miles, and none of it far enough away to be a different life.

Rabbit writes bars on the bus along this route with a marker on a folded sheet, headphones on, breathing on the window. That is the most honest image in the movie and it costs nothing to repeat. Ride a bus down 8 Mile at dusk, watch the sodium lights come up over the used-car lots, and you understand why crossing a street can feel like emigrating.
