8 Mile|Michigan Theatre Parking Garage — verses traded under a ruined movie palace

Drive up the ramp at 220 Bagley Avenue in downtown Detroit and the ceiling stops being a ceiling. Above the parked sedans and the oil stains hangs a coffered vault of French Renaissance plaster, gold leaf worn down to grey, arches that once framed 4,000 seats and a Wurlitzer organ. The Michigan Theatre opened in 1926 on the block where Henry Ford assembled his first automobile in a brick workshop, and it closed for good in the 1970s. Rather than demolish it — the surrounding office building leaned on its walls — the owners gutted the auditorium and poured three levels of parking inside the shell.

Curtis Hanson put his rival rap crews in here for one of the film's face-offs, and no set designer could have improved on it. Rabbit's Detroit is a city that kept the bones of its grandeur and repurposed the rest, and this room says that in one glance: a palace built for the automobile city, now storing the automobiles.

It still functions as a working garage, so anyone can walk or drive in during business hours for a small fee. Go in the late afternoon, when light comes through the upper openings and lands on the proscenium arch. Stand at the back of the top deck and look up rather than out. The acoustics are still good enough that a raised voice carries — which is exactly why the scene works.
