8MM | Miami International Airport — the threshold a man walks through and does not come back from

8MM is a film about a man who keeps travelling further than he meant to, and Miami International Airport is one of the places the production put that on film. Miami New Times records MIA among the locations used when shooting began in Florida in early 1998.

Airports do a specific job in this kind of story. They are the last neutral ground. A concourse is the same at every hour, the same lighting, the same carpet, the same recorded voice naming gates, and a man carrying something he cannot tell his wife about looks exactly like every other traveller in it. Tom Welles spends the whole picture trying to hold onto that camouflage and losing it a scene at a time.

MIA is one of the busiest gateways in the hemisphere, its concourses fanning out under a long spine of terminal, its arrival halls carrying more Spanish than English. Anyone can walk the landside levels and the Skytrain without a boarding pass. Do it once with 8MM in your head, and the ordinariness will feel less like comfort than like cover.
