She also performed On a Night Like This, the single she was promoting during the return-to-pop phase built around the album Light Years.

That pairing made the appearance more than a medley of familiar songs, because it joined a current release to a ceremony designed as a survey of Australian popular culture.

ABC's later account places Minogue in a lineup that also included Midnight Oil, Yothu Yindi, Savage Garden, Christine Anu, Vanessa Amorosi, John Paul Young and Men at Work.

The event therefore positioned her among several generations of Australian performers rather than treating her as a visiting celebrity at a home Games.

Official footage shows her arriving within the ceremony's deliberately oversized Australiana before moving onto the main performance area for Dancing Queen.

The visual joke was part of the production, but the career significance came from carrying a stadium-scale music segment before athletes and an international broadcast audience.

For listeners who knew Minogue from late-1980s pop, the Olympic stage presented a performer whose public career had continued through changing labels, styles and expectations.
