Biography | Tim Cook — The Keller Center Where an IBM Engineer Finished a Night MBA

People treat a business-school degree as a two-year leave from work.

Cook took his at night, while he still had a day job at IBM.

In 1986 he enrolled at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, arriving from Alabama with an industrial-engineering bachelor's and almost no time away from his home state.

He finished the Evening Executive MBA in 1988 as a Fuqua Scholar, the honor the school gives graduates in the top tenth of the class.

The pin is the Thomas F. Keller Center for MBA Education at 100 Fuqua Drive, on Duke's West Campus.

That building opened in January 1983, three years before he arrived, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes as two brick wings around amphitheater classrooms and the Geneen Auditorium.

It is the campus he used.

The R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center, often attached to later executive-MBA stories, did not open until May 1989, after he had already graduated.

Do not look for his classrooms in that later block, or in Breeden Hall, which opened in 2008.

He was still on IBM's payroll at Research Triangle Park while he sat in these rooms.

The MBA did not invent the operations career.

It sat on top of twelve years in IBM's personal-computer business, the stretch that ended with the title of director of North American fulfillment.

Duke later put him on the Board of Trustees in 2015 and asked him back as commencement speaker in 2018.

Those returns are a different date.

This date is the year the night classes ended and the scholar line went on the transcript.
