People look for a standing birth house in Robertsdale and treat that town as the first line on the certificate.
Timothy Donald Cook was born on 1 November 1960 in Mobile, Alabama. He was the middle of three sons of Donald Cook, a shipyard foreman, and Geraldine Cook.
Donald worked at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding on Pinto Island, then the largest employer in Mobile. Geraldine later worked part-time at a pharmacy.
The family did not settle in one Baldwin County house at the start. They spent short spells in Pensacola and in Mobile before choosing Robertsdale in 1971, when Tim was about eleven.
Geraldine later told AL.com they picked the town so the three boys could attend the same school — something the earlier moves had not allowed.
Mobile is the port city on the west side of the bay. Robertsdale is a farm town about forty miles southeast, inland from the Gulf.
The first document is a Mobile birth. The house that neighbours still point to came later, on East Silverhill Avenue.
A visitor can walk the waterfront and the ship-channel edge. Do not treat a later hometown as the delivery room.
