People treat the Apple campus as the first address that mattered.
The first house the Cooks meant to keep was here, on East Silverhill Avenue in Robertsdale, Alabama.
In 1971 Donald and Geraldine Cook moved their three sons — Gerald, Tim and Michael — from short spells in Pensacola and Mobile into a split-level house on a street that then had few neighbours.
Robertsdale had about 2,300 people. Geraldine later called it "a little hole in the ground" and said they were glad to be there. They chose it so the boys could stay in one school.
Tim was eleven. His first paid work was a paper route for the Press-Register. He later said he rose at three in the morning, threw the stack, and usually slept again before school. The route helped pay for college.
He also worked in a restaurant and at Lee Drug Store with his mother. Neighbours remembered a boy who kept books for the yearbook staff.
East Silverhill Avenue is still a residential street. The family house was private then and remains private now.
Stay on the public pavement. Do not treat a living street as a museum lot.
