Biography | Tim Cook — The Fuqua MBA That Classed Him a Scholar in 1988

Six years into IBM, the industrial engineer still needed a second language.

Cook left Auburn for IBM in 1982 and, while he was inside that company, took an MBA at Duke's Fuqua School of Business.

He finished in 1988 as a Fuqua Scholar, the honor the school gives students in the top tenth of the class.

Fuqua sits on Duke's West Campus, a short walk from the chapel tower that every visitor photographs.

The business school itself is a cluster: Keller Center, later Magat, Fox, Breeden. The pin is the school, not a single seminar room whose 1988 number no longer maps cleanly.

The MBA did not make him a founder. It sat on top of plant-floor training and gave him the finance and strategy vocabulary IBM and Compaq expected of a director.

From Duke he stayed with IBM until 1994, then became chief operating officer of Intelligent Electronics' reseller division.

In 1997 he moved to Compaq as vice president of corporate materials. He lasted about six months.

The Fuqua credential followed him into those offices and, later, back onto Duke's board of trustees in 2015.

He gave the university's commencement address in 2018.

Those later appearances are easy to stream. The 1988 fact is quieter and more useful.

A Baldwin County salutatorian had by then collected the two degrees that still sit on his public biography: industrial engineering from a land-grant campus, and a ranked MBA from a private one.

Everything after that is employment history.

The chapel is not Fuqua. It is the landmark that tells a stranger they are on the right side of campus.

Walk from the slate path off Science Drive toward Breeden Hall and you are standing where that second degree was granted.
