Biography | Tim Cook — The Industrial Engineering Degree He Took from This Campus in 1982

Cook has said since childhood that he meant to come to Auburn.

Neither of his parents had gone to college. He treated the seat as something he was not allowed to waste.

He enrolled after Robertsdale High School and graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.

The department has granted that degree since 1931. In Cook's years it still ran a cooperative-education track that sent students into real plants between terms.

Industrial engineering is the unglamorous sibling of the electrical and computer programs that later filled Silicon Valley profiles.

It is the study of how work actually moves: inventory, lines, yield, the gap between a plan and a loading dock.

That training is the part of Cook's résumé that later writers flatten into the word operations.

Samford Hall, the brick clock tower on College Street, was already the campus landmark when he was a student.

It is not the engineering classroom. It is the building a visitor can still stand in front of.

The industrial-and-systems offices later moved into Shelby Center on Magnolia Avenue. That building did not exist in 1982.

After commencement he went to IBM and stayed twelve years, finishing as director of North American fulfillment for the personal-computer business.

The loop back to Auburn never closed.

He became founding chair of the department's alumni council, endowed a professorship and a leadership scholarship, and spoke at commencement in 2010.

In 2009 Alabama put him in its Engineering Hall of Fame. In 2026 the National Academy of Engineering elected him.

The later titles are easy to list. The useful fact on this quadrangle is narrower.

The man who rebuilt Apple's factories and inventory learned the vocabulary for that work here, in a public land-grant college, before anyone in Cupertino knew his name.
