Biography | Craig Barrett — Named Intel's Fourth CEO from This Campus

People treat an Intel succession as a speech in a convention hall.

This one was a Santa Clara press release.

On 26 March 1998 Intel said its board planned to elect Craig R. Barrett, then president and chief operating officer, as chief executive at the organizational meeting after the annual meeting on 20 May.

He would succeed Andrew S. Grove, who would stay on full time as chairman.

Barrett was fifty-eight. Grove had held the chief-executive title for eleven years.

The release dated the announcement from Santa Clara.

The public face of that campus is the Robert Noyce Building at 2200 Mission College Boulevard, which now holds the Intel Museum.

Barrett had been president since May 1997, chief operating officer since 1993, a director since 1992, and an Intel employee since 1974.

He was the first chief executive who had not been a founder.

Noyce, Moore, and Grove had each held the job for about a decade.

The change took effect on 20 May 1998, as the company stated that spring.

He kept the title until 18 May 2005, when Paul Otellini became the fifth CEO and Barrett moved to chairman.

The 1998 announcement did not invent a new company.

It handed the operations system Barrett had already built to the man who would have to run it through the cheap-PC years and the crash that followed.
