Biography | Dara Khosrowshahi — The Fifth Avenue Firm That Hired the New Engineer

The first job after Brown was not a chip lab and not a garage startup.

It was an investment bank on Fifth Avenue.

Khosrowshahi joined Allen and Company as an analyst in 1991, the year of the Brown diploma.

Bloomberg's 2017 career sketch lists the stretch as 1991 to 1998. Later company biographies and the 2017 Uber board memo to staff repeat the same firm before the move to Barry Diller's companies.

Allen and Company has long occupied 711 Fifth Avenue, at the corner with 55th Street. OpenStreetMap places the tower at about 40.7617 north, 73.9744 west.

The work there was deal analysis, not writing code. One later profile records that Diller became a client, and that the relationship pulled Khosrowshahi to USA Networks in 1998.

From USA Networks he moved inside Diller's group to IAC, first as a planner and later as chief financial officer.

IAC bought Expedia in 2001. The New York Times, on 8 August 2005, records that Khosrowshahi had already been running Expedia since the previous December and that the spinoff that afternoon made him chief executive of the standalone travel company.

The Fifth Avenue pin is the start of that chain, not the Expedia years in Bellevue.
