Biography | Dara Khosrowshahi — The Tarrytown Hill School After the Flight From Tehran

People file the Uber chief as a Silicon Valley product who appeared on Market Street in 2017.

The first named American school is on Benedict Avenue, on a hill above Tarrytown.

Dara Khosrowshahi was born in Tehran on 28 May 1969.

Wikipedia, company biographies, and later profiles all give that date and city.

The family firm behind him was Alborz Investment Company, a private conglomerate in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, and distribution.

The childhood house in Tehran is not the pin. It was a private compound, and the public record does not publish a street number a visitor can stand on.

What the record does fix is the year the family left.

The New York Times, writing on 8 August 2005, places a nine-year-old Khosrowshahi leaving Tehran in the summer of 1978 for a regular holiday in the south of France. With the revolution underway, the family did not go back.

Bloomberg's 2017 career sketch, told in his own later telling, puts the next roof in Tarrytown: they moved in with an uncle on the Hudson.

The private house of that uncle is not the pin either.

Hackley School is.

The campus still stands at 293 Benedict Avenue. Wikipedia puts the school at 41 degrees 4 minutes north, 73 degrees 50 minutes west. Founded in 1899 on land given by Frances Hackley, it remains an independent K-12 school, not a museum to one alumnus.

From here he went to Brown as an engineer.

The 1908 quadrangle photograph is the campus as a historic image, not the year he walked it. The portrait is a 2019 official photograph taken in New York, long after the hilltop years.
