Biography | Dara Khosrowshahi — The Market Street Floor That Took Him After Kalanick

The search was not quiet, and he was not the name the press had been printing all summer.

On 29 August 2017 Uber's board told staff it had voted unanimously to appoint Dara Khosrowshahi chief executive.

TechCrunch, Business Insider, The Verge, and Bloomberg all timestamp the public confirmation to that Tuesday night. The board had settled on him that Sunday, 27 August, after Jeffrey Immelt withdrew and Meg Whitman remained in the last frame.

Travis Kalanick had resigned as chief executive on 20 June. The seat had been empty for fewer than twelve weeks.

The board memo, published by the company and reprinted in full by Business Insider and TechCrunch, said he would join an all-hands on 30 August.

The building for that week was 1455 Market Street.

Uber had opened this Mid-Market headquarters on 19 May 2014 and still used it as the global office in 2017.

The later Mission Bay campus was announced that December and did not take staff until about 2020.

He arrived from Expedia, where he had been chief executive since the August 2005 IAC spinoff.

The job he took was a repair job: culture investigations, a driver protest record, and a company that had not yet gone public.

A visitor now finds a Mid-Market office tower that has housed more than one tech tenant. It is not a shrine, and it is not Uber's present campus.
