Biography | Dara Khosrowshahi — The NYSE Bell That Opened UBER Below the Offer

The public debut was not a first-day pop.

On 10 May 2019 Uber began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker UBER.

The company had priced 180 million shares at 45 dollars the night before, 9 May, according to its own investor-relations release.

Trading opened at 42.

CNBC recorded a 7.6 percent drop on the close, with a first-day market value near 69.7 billion dollars.

Khosrowshahi rang the opening bell from the balcony.

Co-founders Travis Kalanick, Garrett Camp, and Ryan Graves were on the floor.

Contemporary reports said Kalanick had asked to share the balcony and was kept downstairs.

Outside the Broad Street columns, drivers protested pay and conditions.

TechCrunch and other desks filed that scene the same morning.

The listing raised about 8.1 billion dollars and was billed as the largest American IPO since Facebook in 2012.

It was also a first-day loss against the offer price, after Lyft's own weak debut had already reset the range.

Nominatim places the exchange at 11 Wall Street, about 40.7071 north, 74.0112 west.

Two years earlier the same chief had taken the job in a Market Street all-hands.

This was the day the books opened to public holders.
