People treat Oslo Cathedral School as a background line on a CV.

The building at Ullevålsveien 31 is where Erik Solheim sat the examen artium that the Storting later recorded as 1974.

Store norske leksikon dates the same leaving exam to 1973.

The two official summaries disagree by a year, and neither publishes the certificate.

What is not in dispute is the school.

Katta, formally Schola Osloensis, has taught on this site since the nineteenth-century block went up after the medieval school left the old town.

Solheim was born in Oslo on 18 January 1955, the son of a publishing consultant and a Supreme Court administrator.

He grew up in the city and came through this selective upper-secondary school before national service in the Air Force at Bodø in 1974 and 1975.

The University of Oslo then took him for a cand.mag. in history and social studies, awarded in 1980.

The cathedral school is the first dated public building in that chain.

It is still a working videregående school, not a museum of famous pupils.

A visitor on Ullevålsveien sees the same brick street front that Anders Beer Wilse photographed in 1902, altered and extended but not replaced.

The moment worth pinning is not that a future minister once walked these corridors.

It is that the parliamentary biography and the national encyclopedia both send a reader here for the first credential they bother to name.

The later career — party leader, cabinet minister, OECD chair, UNEP director — starts after this gate.

Stand on the pavement and the claim is modest: this is where the paper trail of his education begins.
