Biography | Karl Marx — The Bonn Enrollment Before Berlin and London

On 17 October 1835, seventeen-year-old Karl Marx enrolled at the University of Bonn to study law.

The university's release certificate, issued the following August, preserves that date and identifies the student as Carl Heinrich Marx of Trier.

The former Electoral Palace anchors his first university setting.

The Prussian king had given the palace to the new university in 1818, and the institution still identifies it as its original main building.

Marx arrived in a place whose recent conversion from princely residence to university reflected a different use of inherited architecture.

His surviving academic record gives the story more substance than a later reputation alone.

For the winter term of 1835–36, it lists courses in jurisprudence, Roman legal institutions and the history of Roman law.

It also records mythology, Homer and the history of modern art.

The law student was pursuing a wider range of intellectual interests, before the philosophical work that would become central to his life.

The certificate's descriptions of diligent attendance sit alongside a less flattering disciplinary entry.

It records a day's detention for disturbing the peace through nighttime rowdiness and drunkenness.

That document offers a mixed portrait of an ordinary young student, rather than a retrospective image of a fully formed political thinker.

Marx transferred to Berlin in 1836.

Bonn was the first university stage after Trier, not the place where he completed his later economic writings.

The geographical connection is to the university's historic main building; the surviving records do not identify a particular desk where he signed his enrollment.

Nor should the present palace interior be treated as untouched from 1835.

The building suffered wartime destruction and subsequent reconstruction, while continuing its institutional role.

The Hofgarten frontage provides a visible connection to the university that admitted him, even as the fabric and uses of individual rooms have changed.
