Biography | Karl Marx — The Bronze Head Unveiled Above a Moved Grave

The bronze head above Karl Marx's grave belongs to a memorial unveiled in 1956, not to his original burial in 1883.

On 15 March 1956, the new monument was unveiled in Highgate's East Cemetery.

The ceremony placed a large public image of the political thinker above a family burial place that had itself been moved.

Historic England records that Marx was first buried about a hundred yards south of the present site.

The remains were transferred in 1954, before the new monument was completed.

The sculptor Laurence Bradshaw designed the memorial, combining a large bronze portrait bust with an inscribed rectangular pedestal.

The official heritage description identifies the pedestal as marble.

Its scale and elevated head make it conspicuous among the surrounding graves, while the smaller inscription panel preserves the names and dates of members of the family and household.

The memorial's words address readers through Marx's published ideas.

They should not be mistaken for a record of his final spoken words or for an inscription he selected for this later structure.

Harry Pollitt led the unveiling, and the Communist Party of Great Britain financed the monument.

That sponsorship places the work in the political culture of the twentieth century as well as in the biography of a nineteenth-century exile.

The distinction between person, burial and later commemoration is visible in the object itself.

It tells us how Marx was remembered by supporters decades after his death.

The tomb is now Grade I listed.

Historic England records an initial listing on 14 May 1974 and an amendment on 11 January 1999; those dates should not be collapsed into a claim about when every part of the present designation took effect.

The map marks the later monument in the East Cemetery.

Highgate remains an active burial ground, so visiting this historical memorial also requires respect for other graves, mourners and the cemetery's access arrangements.
