Biography | Mark Twain — Born in a Two-Room Cabin in Florida, Missouri

People treat Mark Twain as a river-town invention, as if Hannibal were the first pin.

The first pin is smaller.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born here on 30 November 1835, two months early, in a rented two-room cabin in the village of Florida, Monroe County, Missouri.

His parents were John Marshall Clemens, a lawyer and storekeeper from Virginia stock, and Jane Lampton Clemens of Kentucky.

The cabin held eight people after the birth: the parents, five children, and an enslaved teenager.

Florida then had fewer than three hundred residents.

Halley's Comet was in the sky the night he was born.

The family left Florida for Hannibal in 1839, when Samuel was three.

What stands at this pin is not the original village lot.

A red granite monument raised by the State of Missouri in 1913 marks the cabin's first site, a short walk from here.

The cabin itself was moved more than once and, from 1959 to 1960, enclosed inside the Mark Twain Birthplace Memorial Museum at 37352 Shrine Road, so weather would not finish it.

The museum sits on a peninsula at the west end of Mark Twain Lake, a reservoir finished in 1984.

Visitors walk up to the two rooms behind a simple barrier.

The site also holds first editions, a handwritten manuscript of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and furniture later brought from the Hartford house.

Clemens later wrote that someone in Missouri had sent him a picture of the house, and that he would stop calling it a palace.

The village of Florida is almost gone.

The cabin is what remains of the beginning.
