It starts in Moscow, in an academic family that decided it had to leave.
Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin was born on 21 August 1973 in Moscow, then the capital of the Soviet Union.
Both of his parents, Mikhail and Eugenia Brin, had graduated from Moscow State University.
His father was a mathematician. His mother later worked as a scientist in the United States.
The family apartment is private and is not this pin.
The public building that stands for that household is the university they came from.
The main building on Sparrow Hills, at 1 Leninskie Gory, opened in 1953.
It is the tallest of Moscow's Stalin-era towers and still the university's landmark.
In 1977, after a mathematics conference in Warsaw, Mikhail Brin concluded that antisemitism made a future in the Soviet academy untenable.
The family applied for an exit visa in September 1978.
He lost his post. She had to leave hers.
They waited eight months with temporary work until visas came through in May 1979.
They reached the United States on 25 October 1979, when Sergey was six.
The tower on the hill is what a visitor can stand in front of.
