Biography | Thomas Jefferson — He Died in This House on 4 July 1826

People remember that Jefferson and John Adams died on the same calendar day and treat it as an arranged ending.

What can be pinned is narrower.

Jefferson died at Monticello around noon on 4 July 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration he had drafted.

He was eighty-three.

His physician, Robley Dunglison, had been called on 24 June. By 26 June Jefferson was confined to bed.

From 2 July he was mostly unconscious, waking now and then to ask whether the Fourth had come.

Adams died later the same afternoon in Quincy, Massachusetts, at ninety.

Later retellings give Adams last words that name Jefferson as still alive. Jefferson had already died.

The cause was never isolated to one disease. Family and physicians described long bowel illness, exhaustion, and the collapse of an old man who had been failing for months.

He left the house in debt. In January 1827 furnishings and 130 enslaved people held as his property were sold to meet creditors.

He had already drawn the inscription he wanted on an obelisk: author of the Declaration of Independence, of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and father of the University of Virginia. No presidential title.

The pin is the house, the same mountain as the 1770 move-in, a different moment.

The grave on the slope is a later memory.
