[U2’s official PopMart archive](https://www.u2.com/blogs/popmart-leg-2-1997-europe) dates the band’s Valle Hovin session to August 6, 1997. During the encore, a scripted entrance became a live production failure: [U2’s archived “Lemon alert” account](https://www.u2.com/blogs/news/oslo-show-lemon-alert) says the tour’s rotating mirror-ball lemon opened only about 18 inches, leaving the band inside.
The recovery depended on the crew rather than the script. The archived account describes the video director replaying imagery while audio and lighting operators improvised cover; the prop retreated, the musicians got out, and the encore continued from the satellite stage. In a later [VG interview preserved by U2tour.de](https://u2tour.de/news/article714), Larry Mullen Jr independently recalled that the lemon failed to open and trapped the band. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/jul/30/u2-tour-carbon-footprint) likewise places the malfunction during an encore in Norway and reports that the band escaped through the back. Mullen remembered Oslo as the only occurrence, while a later Guardian overview reported two failures, so this account makes no claim of exclusivity.
Valle Hovin’s open-air rink was also a summer concert ground, as [VisitOSLO’s venue record](https://www.visitoslo.com/attraction/valle-hovin/) notes. That flat temporary-event footprint could take PopMart’s touring machinery, but Oslo exposed the operational cost of building an encore around one moving prop: when it stalled, video, sound, lighting and performers had to turn a mechanical entrance into a manual recovery in front of the stadium audience.
The pin marks the centre of the Valle Hovin rink and concert footprint at 59.918500, 10.804300. The [OpenStreetMap-derived place record](https://mapy.com/en/?id=1057536151&source=osm) and [Wikidata’s Valle Hovin record](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4584406) differ by about 30 metres. The ±180-metre precision radius covers the outdoor venue footprint; it does not claim the undocumented 1997 stage, prop track or exit position.
