Reply 1988 | Taegeukdang — Vienna Coffee After the Night Shift

The sign still reads like a receipt from 1973. Four floors of brick on Dongho-ro 24-gil, one minute from Dongguk University Station Exit 2, glass cases of monaka and gobang castella under fluorescent light that has not learned to be fashionable.

In Episode 15 of Reply 1988, Sung Sun-woo brought Ryu Bo-ra here after work. They ordered Vienna coffee. The cups sat between a law-student sister who had decided to try again and a boy from the alley who already knew how to be careful with other people's pride. The bakery did not need to pretend it was 1988. It had been baking through the war, through Myeong-dong, through the move to Jangchung-dong. The drama only had to sit down.

Taegeukdang opened in Myeong-dong in 1946 and came to this building in 1973. Seoul lists it as an oraegage. The city calls it the oldest working bakery in the capital. The 2015 renovation put the old cash register and the tax-slogan wood board back on the wall instead of hiding them. You buy a monaka, eat it standing, and the wafer still snaps the way a 1988 afternoon would have snapped.

Walk out onto the slope toward Jangchungdan. The street is louder now. The coffee is still the point.
