Sun Yat-sen reached Beijing at the end of 1924 to negotiate China's peaceful reunification, and collapsed within weeks. On January 26, 1925, surgeons at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital opened his abdomen and found cancer too far advanced to remove.
On February 18 he was moved to the residence of the diplomat Wellington Koo, then serving as Kuomintang headquarters in the city, where he kept receiving party leaders from his sickbed.
He signed his political testament on March 11, telling his comrades the revolution was not yet complete and charging them to carry it through. He died at 9:30 the next morning, March 12, 1925, at age 58.
The hospital's autopsy corrected the record decades before the public heard it: not liver cancer, as was long believed, but gallbladder cancer that had spread to the liver. His body lay in state in Beijing while enormous crowds came to mourn.
Forty years separated the Hong Kong medical student from the man mourned as the father of modern China: ten failed uprisings, sixteen years of exile, one dynasty toppled, one academy built.
