Biography | Andrew Carnegie — 2 East 91st Street, the Mansion After the Steel Sale
kevin
People treat Skibo Castle as the house the steel fortune occupied.
The New York house was this one.
The Andrew Carnegie Mansion stands at 2 East 91st Street, on the east side of Fifth Avenue in Carnegie Hill. Babb, Cook and Willard designed the Georgian Revival brick and stone pile. It was built from 1899 to 1902 for Carnegie, Louise Whitfield Carnegie and their daughter Margaret.
In 1901 Carnegie sold Carnegie Steel to J. P. Morgan's syndicate. The firm became U.S. Steel. The mansion is where the retired industrialist wrote the cheques that built libraries, the Peace Palace and Carnegie Hall's endowment. The family left in 1946. Since 1976 the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, has occupied the rooms.
