Biography | Andrew Carnegie — Allegheny After the Hand Loom Failed
kevin
People treat Pittsburgh steel as the first American room he entered.
The first American street was this one.
In 1848 the power loom and a slump in Dunfermline ended William Carnegie's work at the hand loom. The family crossed with a Scottish colony of relatives and landed in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now the North Side of Pittsburgh.
Andrew was twelve. He took a bobbin-boy wage in a cotton factory, then a telegraph messenger's run, then a job on the Pennsylvania Railroad under Thomas A. Scott. Allegheny is where the weaver's son stopped weaving. The later mills sat across the rivers. The first American address was this river town.
