People treat a philanthropist's libraries as the rooms that define the name.
The mill that paid for them stood here.
Homestead Steel Works sat on the Monongahela at Homestead, Pennsylvania. Carnegie bought the two-year-old plant in 1883 and folded it into Carnegie Steel. For years it was among the largest mills on earth.
On 30 June 1892 the company locked out the Amalgamated Association. On 6 July Pinkerton agents came up the river and fought the strikers. The union broke. Carnegie was in Scotland. Henry Clay Frick ran the ground. The water tower of the old pumphouse is one of the 1800s structures that still stand. The rest of the works is a waterfront and a shopping site. The strike is what the town kept.
