Biography | Joko Widodo — The Bali Summit That Put Indonesia at the Center of the G20
kevin
On November 15, 2022, President Joko Widodo opened the Group of Twenty leaders' summit at the Apurva Kempinski Bali in Nusa Dua.
Indonesia's Cabinet Secretariat records the opening in the hotel's first summit session, and Reuters independently places the leaders' arrival and formal start at the main Bali venue that morning.
The gathering was the first G20 leaders' summit hosted by Indonesia and the most visible international meeting of Widodo's presidency.
It brought the leaders of the world's major economies to an Indonesian-chaired table at a moment of unusually sharp geopolitical and economic strain.
Russia's war against Ukraine, rising inflation, food insecurity, energy pressure, and the uneven recovery from the pandemic all shaped the discussions.
Widodo's opening remarks emphasized that the delegates carried responsibility beyond their own countries because failures among major economies would fall especially hard on vulnerable populations.
That message reflected Indonesia's difficult role as host: it had to keep negotiations moving among governments that disagreed deeply about both the war and the language used to describe it.
The summit nevertheless concluded the following day with a leaders' declaration adopted by consensus, while acknowledging that members held different assessments of the situation in Ukraine.
At the closing session on November 16, Widodo transferred the G20 presidency to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formally ending Indonesia's year in the chair.
The Bali meeting did not resolve the conflicts surrounding it, but it demonstrated Indonesia's ability to convene rival powers and secure a common final document.
This pin marks the verified public hotel complex that served as the summit's main venue, without identifying a restricted meeting room, security route, accommodation, or present-day movement.
The cover photograph is a CC0 panorama of the Apurva Kempinski made on July 25, 2021, more than a year before the summit.
It is used as a clearly dated architectural view of the venue rather than as an image of the leaders or the November 2022 sessions.
