Biography | Joko Widodo — The Council Oath That Moved Him from Solo to Jakarta
kevin
On October 15, 2012, Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama were sworn in as Jakarta's governor and deputy governor at the Jakarta City Council building.
Contemporary reports place the ceremony in the council's plenary room on Jalan Kebon Sirih and identify Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi as the official who administered the oath.
The formal sitting converted the result of Jakarta's gubernatorial election into authority over Indonesia's capital and its enormous urban government.
Widodo arrived after serving as mayor of Surakarta, commonly called Solo, while Basuki brought experience as a legislator and former district head.
Their ascent was unusual because the pair had defeated incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo in a runoff rather than inheriting office through an internal appointment.
The council chamber therefore marked a transition between Widodo's municipal record in Central Java and a much larger stage in Jakarta.
Soon after the inauguration, national and international reporting treated the new governor as a political figure whose appeal extended beyond the capital.
That attention did not make the later presidency inevitable, but it made the Jakarta oath a clear hinge in the public career that followed.
The place also mattered institutionally because the elected ticket took office before the regional legislature in a constitutional ceremony, not at a campaign rally or private party event.
This pin marks the public Jakarta City Council building at Jalan Kebon Sirih No. 18, the verified complex where the plenary inauguration took place.
It does not identify Widodo's exact position inside the room and records no residence, private route, security detail, or present-day routine.
The cover photograph was made on November 25, 2012, during an official public visit involving Norwegian ministers, more than a month after the inauguration, and is used as an era-matched image rather than a photograph of the oath.
In that photograph, Widodo is shown publicly carrying out the governorship whose beginning this memory records.
