Biography | Joko Widodo — The Bundaran HI Launch That Put Jakarta's First MRT into Service
kevin
On March 24, 2019, President Joko Widodo inaugurated Indonesia's first mass rapid transit line at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in central Jakarta.
Indonesia's Cabinet Secretariat places the ceremony at the traffic circle beside Bundaran HI station, while contemporary reporting confirms that the new line opened to the public that Sunday.
The event gave Jakarta a new kind of urban railway after decades in which plans for rapid transit had repeatedly stalled.
Its first phase linked the southern district of Lebak Bulus with the commercial center around Bundaran HI through elevated and underground sections.
The opening also joined two chapters of Widodo's public career because he had approved the project's physical construction while serving as Jakarta governor in 2013.
By returning as president to inaugurate the completed line, he stood at both the political beginning and the national unveiling of the same infrastructure project.
The significance was larger than a ceremonial train ride because Jakarta's congestion had long imposed costs on commuters, businesses, and the wider metropolitan economy.
Widodo used the occasion to frame mass transit as a change in civic habits as well as engineering, asking passengers to care for the trains and stations as shared public space.
The ceremony also marked the start of work on the route's northward extension, keeping the opening connected to a longer transport program rather than treating the first phase as finished in isolation.
This pin marks the public Hotel Indonesia roundabout where the inauguration ceremony was held, not a train car, platform position, or private movement route.
The cover photograph shows the interior of Bundaran HI station on March 17, 2019, during the public trial period one week before the formal inauguration.
It is therefore a closely timed view of the completed public infrastructure, but it is not presented as a photograph of Widodo or of the March 24 ceremony.
No residence, security detail, restricted room, current schedule, or private route is recorded here.
