Biography | Yang Yuanqing — The East Campus That Finished the Master's Before Legend

The second named degree is not in Shanghai.

It is on the old east campus of the University of Science and Technology of China, at 96 Jinzhai Road in Hefei.

Yang took a master's in computer science here after the 1986 bachelor's from Jiaotong.

Lenovo's own leadership page, Columbia Engineering's visitor biography, and the Chinese Wikipedia entry all date that master's to 1989.

English Wikipedia has printed 1988.

The split is a calendar disagreement in secondary summaries, not two different degrees.

OpenStreetMap places the east campus at 31.83907, 117.26421.

This was the ground USTC occupied after the move from Beijing in 1970.

It is a public university gate, not a residence.

He had looked at an academic path.

While still attached to this degree he answered a Legend recruitment notice and joined the firm in 1989 as a salesman of Sun workstations.

Munzinger records that in 1991 he nearly left for an American doctorate and was kept by a sales-manager offer from Liu Chuanzhi.

Legend, later Lenovo, remained the only employer.

In December 2023 he returned to this same east campus with a personal gift of 200 million yuan for a teaching building timed to the university's 65th year.

That gift is a later memory.
