The second tour as chief executive was not a quiet succession.

On 5 February 2009 Lenovo Group, listed here as stock code 992, told the market that William J. Amelio would leave as president and chief executive.

Yang Yuanqing, then chairman, would take the chief-executive seat again.

Liu Chuanzhi would return as chairman.

Caixin, Sina, and Bloomberg all dated the announcement to that Thursday.

The same day the company posted a 97 million dollar loss for the quarter ended 31 December 2008, against a 172 million dollar profit a year earlier.

Sales for the quarter were given as 3.6 billion dollars, down from 4.5 billion.

Amelio would stay as an adviser through September 2009.

Yang had already held the chief-executive job from 2001 to 2005, before the IBM close pushed him into the chair.

Harvard Business Review later recorded his own account of the 2009 request from the board after that loss quarter.
