Dynastic History | Mausoleo di Teodorico — The Stone Lid and the Empty Tub

Theoderic ruled Italy from Ravenna from 493, styled king and holding the peninsula on a mandate from the eastern emperor at Constantinople that the two courts read differently. He was an Arian Christian governing a mostly Nicene population, and he built for his own church as well as beside it: an Arian baptistery, an Arian cathedral, a palace chapel next to his residence.

Around 520 he had a two-storey decagonal tomb raised outside the walls to the north-east, in squared stone blocks fastened with iron cramps. The roof is a single quarried monolith, ringed with twelve carved handles that were presumably the lifting points. Published weights for that block disagree by tens of tonnes — one standard account gives 230, the Italian state tourism authority 290 — which is a fair measure of how much about its transport and setting is inference rather than record. Nothing survives about who cut it, floated it, or hauled it into place.

The burial vessel inside is a reused Roman porphyry tub, most likely a fitting taken from a bath building. It is empty. Under Byzantine rule after Justinian's forces took the city in 540 the mausoleum was converted into a Christian oratory, and Theoderic's remains are not in it; no contemporary account records their removal. The World Heritage description still calls the building the only surviving tomb of a "barbarian king" — the vocabulary is the nomination file's, not the record's.

It stands in a small park at Via delle Industrie 14, between the ring road and the railway, run by the Direzione Regionale Musei Emilia-Romagna.
