Dynastic History | Sant'Apollinare in Classe — The Basilica the Harbour Left Behind

Classe takes its name from classis, the fleet. The harbour south of Ravenna held the Roman Adriatic squadron, and that harbour is the reason the western court moved here in 402 instead of to a more defensible inland city: a capital that could be resupplied by sea was worth more than one that could be walked to.

The basilica was commissioned in the later 530s and consecrated on 9 May 549 by Archbishop Maximian. Julianus Argentarius, the financier who had paid for San Vitale, paid for this one too. It went up over ground already used for burials, and Roman tombstones were reused in the fabric — the building is standing on the port's own dead.

Then the sea left. River silt pushed the coastline steadily east, the basins filled, and the shore now lies roughly nine kilometres away across drained farmland. A church built at a working port stands in fields. In the fifteenth century Sigismondo Malatesta had the marble revetment stripped from the side aisles and carried to Rimini for the Tempio Malatestiano, which is why the nave walls above the columns are bare brick and the apse is the only decoration surviving at scale.

That apse is a green landscape of sheep and trees with Apollinaris standing among them, arms raised. The basilica is run by the Fondazione Parco Archeologico di Classe – RavennAntica at Via Classense 29, which also operates the excavated port site and the Classis museum a short way north, where the harbour that made the capital possible is visible as foundations under a roof.
