People treat Samsung Electronics as a Suwon campus and the top weight in the KOSPI 200.
The group name began on this Daegu block as a trading shop.
On 1 March 1938 Lee Byung-chul opened Samsung Sanghoe in Su-dong, now Ingyo-dong, in what was then Daegu under Japanese rule.
Samsung's official history records the starting capital as 30,000 won in 1938 currency.
The shop dealt in dried fish, fruit and vegetables, and noodles, and sent goods toward Manchuria and Beijing.
The name Samsung, three stars, is the one the later electronics company still carries.
The wooden shop is gone.
Daegu records place the original building at Ingyo-dong 59-3. It was demolished in 1997 after standing empty.
What a visitor finds now is a small memorial plot on Dalseong-ro, with panels and a scaled model of the vanished shop, a short walk from Dalseong Park station.
The trading firm was incorporated in 1941, renamed more than once, and is the parent line of Samsung C&T.
Cheil Jedang, later CJ, came out of the same founder's next factories after the Korean War.
Samsung Electronics Manufacturing was a later decision, taken in 1969 and planted in Maetan-dong, Suwon, not on this street.
The mechanism on this corner is a provincial grocer's books, not a semiconductor line.
The KOSPI name that dwarfs the index still points back to a demolished shop in Daegu.
The memorial is the honest pin. The factory campus is a different memory.
