Hwarang | Cheomseongdae — The Bottle of Stone That Kept Seorabeol’s Sky
kevin
The bottle of granite stands nine metres in a field of grass. A square window cuts the cylinder halfway up. The well-character at the top is empty of instruments now. Birds use it. Tourists walk the rope line and photograph the same angle every hour.
Hwarang needed a capital that still looked like Silla. Park Seo-joon’s agency placed the 2016 shoot on a Gyeongju–Mungyeong–Suwon–Seoul circuit. Cheomseongdae is the piece of that circuit you can still stand beside without a ticket booth in front of the stones. VisitKorea and the Cultural Heritage Administration treat it as National Treasure 31, the oldest surviving observatory in East Asia, raised in Queen Seondeok’s reign when Seorabeol was the city the drama calls home.
The drama dressed young men as hwarang and sent them through a capital that had to feel older than any standing palace roof. This tower is older than those roofs. Three hundred and sixty-odd blocks, twenty-seven courses, a base of twelve stones. The numbers have been read as days and months for as long as school textbooks have sent children here.
Stand off the path at the south-east corner. The window faces you. Behind the bottle the tombs of Daereungwon rise as low green hills. The sky the hwarang would have been trained to read is the same unroofed sky. What you take away is not a reconstructed hall. It is a working shape that outlasted the court that built it.
