Hwarang | Hwaseong Haenggung — The Temporary Palace That Loaned a Court

Sinpungnu is the front gate. Guards in period kit still change on the square in season. Behind the gate the courtyards open in sequence toward Bongsudang, the hall King Jeongjo used when he came south to his father’s tomb.

This is not Silla. It is an eighteenth-century temporary palace inside a UNESCO fortress. Sageuk productions film here because the timber, the courtyards, and the mountain behind Paldalsan already behave like a court. Agency reports on Hwarang put Suwon on the 2016 shooting circuit with Gyeongju, Mungyeong, and Seoul. Hwaseong Haenggung is the palace a crew can book in that city without closing a national palace in Jongno.

VisitKorea and Suwon City keep the site open as a walking palace, not a closed set. You pay the fortress ticket. You stand in the first court and hear school groups before you hear any drama. The buildings were restored from the 1990s onward after the Japanese colonial years erased most of the original fabric. What remains is a working envelope for any story that needs a king’s yard.

Walk through to Naknamheon and look back at the stepped roofs. The hwarang of the series were Silla youth. The courtyard you are in is Joseon. The pilgrimage still works because the production needed walls a camera could believe. What you take away is the grain of the wood under your hand and the knowledge that this court was borrowed, not built for them.
