Hwarang | Korean Folk Village — The Relocated Streets Behind the Suwon Shoot

Thatched roofs sit lower than the tile. A market lane sells rice cake and crafts that were not props. Farmers’ music starts on a schedule. The houses were moved here from across the peninsula and set down as a late-Joseon village in 1974.

Yongin’s Korean Folk Village is the living museum just south of Suwon. Press on Hwarang put Suwon on Park Seo-joon’s 2016 circuit. Sageuk crews have used these lanes for decades when they needed commoners, markets, and dirt yards instead of a palace court. VisitKorea still lists the village as a standard Hallyu and heritage stop, not a closed lot.

You will not find a plaque that says episode seven was shot against this particular fence. You will find the kind of street the series required when Seorabeol had to look inhabited. The difference between this place and a plywood set is that someone still cooks in the kitchens.

Enter through the main gate and keep right toward the noble houses before the market noise takes over. The hwarang were an elite. The village shows the other half of a capital, the part a camera borrows when it cannot dress an entire city. What you take away is the smell of woodsmoke on a working lane, and the fact that the houses arrived here already old.
