Hwarang | Mungyeong Saejae Open Set — The KBS Capital Built Against the Pass

The replica Gwanghwamun sits under Juheulsan as if a capital had been folded into a mountain valley and left there. Tiled roofs run in ranks behind the gate. A dirt road takes the place of a city street. The pass above it is real. The palace is not.

Mungyeong City and VisitKorea list this seventy-thousand-square-metre lot as the KBS historical open set, rebuilt in 2008 on the site first raised in 2000 for Taejo Wang Geon. Agency coverage of Hwarang placed Park Seo-joon’s 2016 shoot in Mungyeong on the same Gyeongju–Mungyeong–Suwon–Seoul circuit. A KBS sageuk that needed streets, gates, and a court in a hurry comes here because the mountains already look older than the timber.

The listed dramas on the municipal board run from Sungkyunkwan Scandal to Kingdom. Hwarang is one more production that used the valley rather than inventing Seorabeol from a soundstage wall. You buy a cheap ticket. You walk under a gate that is smaller than Seoul’s and somehow more convincing, because the ridgeline behind it has not been painted.

Climb a few metres toward the first fortress gate of the real Saejae after you leave the set. The drama ends. The pass does not. What you take away is the mismatch: a plywood capital that worked on camera, and a mountain road that carried officials long before any camera arrived.
