Biography | Fyodor Dostoevsky — A Minute Left to Live on Semyonovsky Square

People remember a last-second pardon as if a rider burst in with a surprise.

The commutation had already been signed.

On the morning of 22 December 1849 Old Style — 3 January 1850 New Style — twenty-one men from the Petrashevsky circle were brought from the Peter and Paul Fortress to Semyonovsky Square, the drill ground of the Semenovsky Regiment.

The death sentence was read aloud.

They were made to kiss the cross.

Swords were broken over the heads of those who held officer rank.

Three posts had been driven into the packed snow.

Petrashevsky, Nikolai Mombelli, and Nikolai Grigoriev were tied to them first, caps pulled down.

Dostoevsky stood in the second three, with Sergei Durov and Aleksei Pleshcheev.

In the letter he wrote to his brother Mikhail that same day he said he had no more than a minute left.

Nicholas I had already commuted the sentences.

The ritual was the point: the condemned were to learn they were about to die, and then learn they would not.

Drums beat the retreat.

The real terms were read.

Dostoevsky received four years of hard labor in a fortress, then service as a private.

The square is gone as a parade ground.

Housing and the Bryantsev Youth Theatre occupy most of the old 26-hectare plat.

What remains as a public space is Pionerskaya Square, named in 1962, between Zagorodny Prospekt and Zvenigorodskaya Street.

A visitor will not find posts or a scaffold mark.

The pin sits on the surviving square, which is the documented successor of Semyonovsky Platz.

The eight months in the fortress and the minutes on this ground are the hinge of the life.

Everything he wrote after Siberia is written by a man who had already stood in the second row.
