Biography | Fyodor Dostoevsky — Buried Beside Zhukovsky at Tikhvin
kevin
People look for a national pantheon on a hill.
He was buried inside a working monastery cemetery in the capital.
The funeral liturgy was sung at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra on 1 February 1881 Old Style — 13 February New Style.
The Lavra had offered Anna Grigorievna any of its grounds.
She chose a plot at Tikhvin Cemetery, near the graves of Nikolai Karamzin and Vasily Zhukovsky.
Crowds followed the coffin from Kuznechny Lane.
Estimates run to tens of thousands; the exact headcount was not taken.
The present monument went up in 1883, designed by the architect Kh. K. Vasiliev with sculpture by Nikolai Laveretsky, in granite and bronze.
The lower stone carries a Gospel line.
In 1968 Anna's ashes, brought from Yalta where she had died in 1918, were reburied beside him.
A grandson was interred here as well.
Tikhvin, opened in 1823 as the New Lazarev cemetery, is now administered as the Necropolis of the Masters of Art by the State Museum of Urban Sculpture.
Glinka, Mussorgsky, Borodin, and Tchaikovsky lie in the same enclosure.
The cemetery is a ticketed museum ground, not an anonymous parish yard.
Keep voices low.
Do not photograph other mourners.
Keep to posted hours.
The pin is the grave itself, on the northeastern side near the church, at the coordinates logged against the monument.
Death belongs to the study on Kuznechny Lane.
This is the afterlife the city chose.
