Biography | Fyodor Dostoevsky — Four Years Behind the Omsk Stockade

People walk into the Omsk literary museum and assume they are standing in the prison.

They are not.

The ostrog itself was demolished.

A fragment of foundation and a plaque mark the stockade site.

What survives as a public building is the Commandant's House of the second Omsk fortress, built in 1799 at what is now ulitsa Dostoevskogo 1.

Dostoevsky reached this fortress on 23 January 1850 Old Style — 4 February New Style — after the transit prison at Tobolsk.

He was enrolled in the convict company for four years.

Sergei Durov arrived with him.

The last commandant, Aleksei Fyodorovich de Grave, lived in this house and is documented as having eased conditions for the two Petrashevsky prisoners where he could.

A courtesy visit here is not the same as a cell.

The writer spent the working years inside the prison compound, in barracks, on work parties, and in the fortress hospital.

He later turned those rooms into Notes from a Dead House.

In Tobolsk, before the last stage, wives of the Decembrists had given the party copies of the New Testament.

That book stayed with him.

He was released in February 1854 and sent on as a private to Semipalatinsk.

The Commandant's House became the Omsk State Literary Museum named for him on 28 January 1983.

A bas-relief on the facade records that Dostoevsky was in this house.

The pin is on the museum, the one standing room a visitor can enter without inventing a vanished barrack.

The ostrog is a different coordinate and a different absence.
