Biography | Fyodor Dostoevsky — Born in the Hospital Wing on Novaya Bozhedomka

People treat Dostoevsky as a Petersburg writer who happened to start life somewhere else.

He was born in a hospital apartment in Moscow.

On 30 October 1821 Old Style — 11 November New Style — Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky arrived in the right-hand wing of the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, on what was then Novaya Bozhedomka.

The parish register of the hospital church of Saints Peter and Paul is blunt.

A child named Fyodor was born in the house of the hospital for the poor, to staff physician Mikhail Andreevich Dostoevsky.

Priest Vasily Ilyin said the prayers.

The father had left military service and taken the modest post at this state hospital for the city's poorest patients.

The mother, Maria Fyodorovna Nechaeva, came from a Moscow merchant family.

Their first son, Mikhail, had been born the year before.

Seven children in all would be packed into the official flat on these grounds.

The boys slept behind a partition.

The hospital itself still stands: a late-classical block of 1803–1806, rebuilt after 1812, now facing ulitsa Dostoevskogo, house 2.

The family later shifted to the other wing.

Fyodor lived on this site until 1837, the year his mother died and his father took the two eldest sons to Petersburg for school.

What he saw from the windows was not a literary salon.

It was a charity hospital yard, and the people who came through it were the ones his later novels would refuse to flatten into types.

The first museum to his name opened in this wing in 1928.

The rooms were reconstructed from the drawings and memoirs of his younger brother Andrei.

Walls, stoves, and floor structure were never gutted.

A visitor today is standing in the same shell, not a replica street.

The pin marks the surviving museum wing, not a guessed courtyard centroid.
