Biography | Javid Abdelmoneim — First MSF Mission, an Emergency Room in Basra

The first MSF assignment was not a speech or a board seat.

In September 2009 Abdelmoneim went to Basra as an emergency doctor at Jumhuree Hospital, the Republican hospital now usually listed as Basra General Teaching Hospital.

MSF's own biographical notes, repeated across the 2025 presidential announcements, fix the month and the hospital.

The work was advanced life support, trauma life support, and resuscitation training.

It also included mass-casualty procedures written in the run-up to Iraq's 2010 parliamentary election.

He was six years out of UCL and already an NHS emergency doctor. The mission lasted six months.

What later profiles call a global career starts as a single room in a southern Iraqi teaching hospital, teaching other clinicians how to keep a trauma bay running when the next wave of wounded arrives.

The building on this pin is the public hospital that carries that lineage. Names have shifted with regimes. The site has not.

A later Haiti posting followed in 2010. Basra is the first dated field contract.
