Biography | Dick Cheney — The Veale Center Debate That Put His Record Before Voters

On October 5, 2004, Vice President Dick Cheney faced Senator John Edwards in the only vice-presidential debate of the 2004 campaign.

The ninety-minute meeting took place at the Veale Center on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

It brought two sharply different political biographies onto one stage: Cheney’s decades in government and Edwards’s shorter career as a senator and presidential candidate.

Moderator Gwen Ifill guided exchanges on Iraq, terrorism, taxes, health care, marriage policy, and the candidates’ fitness to assume the presidency.

Cheney defended the Bush administration’s national-security record and the decision to invade Iraq, while Edwards challenged the war’s planning, costs, and shifting justifications.

Their disagreement made the debate a concentrated public test of the administration’s first-term record rather than a ceremonial encounter between running mates.

The setting also mattered because Case Western Reserve had prepared for months to host a nationally televised constitutional ritual inside an ordinary university athletic complex.

For Cheney, the evening displayed the experience that supporters presented as a source of steadiness and critics regarded as a source of excessive influence.

His answers connected the older public servant who had led the Pentagon with the vice president whose post-September 11 policies were becoming increasingly contested.

The result did not decide the election by itself, but it gave voters a rare sustained view of Cheney defending his record without President George W. Bush beside him.

That makes the Veale Center a distinct biographical place: not an office where power was exercised, but a public arena where that power had to be explained.
