Biography | Sean Doyle — The New Waterside Offices He Joined as a Junior Analyst
kevin
People remember Doyle as the man who walked back into British Airways in 2020.
The first walk-in was twenty-two years earlier.
In August 1998 he joined the airline as a junior finance and business analyst for its African operations, a date given in a 2023 Times profile and consistent with his own career listing.
Waterside, the Niels Torp headquarters on Harmondsworth Moor northwest of Heathrow, had only just been finished that June.
The official opening followed the same year.
He arrived as the carrier still sold itself as the world's favourite airline and as Ryanair and easyJet were already cutting into short-haul fares.
The Irish Times later noted that he was still learning the ropes when the September 2001 attacks in New York brought aviation to a near standstill.
From this building he went on to Asia-Pacific finance between Sydney and Singapore, cargo finance, the American joint venture work with American Airlines, and, from 2016, the executive seat for network, fleet and alliances.
The pin is the public face of the headquarters, not a private office floor.
Heathrow's third-runway plans have since put the site itself under threat of demolition, a fact recorded on the building's own Wikipedia file.
What happened here in 1998 was smaller than that fight.
A Cork accountant took a junior desk in a new glass street and stayed long enough to run the airline.
