In "10,000 Hours of Play," Yu-kai Chou positions SpaceX as Elon Musk's ultimate quest, the one that aligned his mission (Step 1) of extending human consciousness beyond Earth with his accumulated skills (Step 4).
After PayPal, Musk tried to buy refurbished rockets from Russia for a Mars greenhouse project. The Russians laughed at him.
On the flight home, he opened a spreadsheet and calculated that he could build rockets cheaper himself.
In May 2002, he founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp. — SpaceX — in El Segundo, California, and poured $100 million of his own money into it. The company later moved into this building at 1 Rocket Road in Hawthorne, a plant Northrop had built to make Boeing 747 fuselage sections.
The first three Falcon 1 launches failed. Each burned through tens of millions.
By 2008, Musk was nearly bankrupt, down to his last launch attempt. It was the Plot Fail Quest that almost ended the game, followed by the breakthrough that changed everything.
